Die New Yorker ‚Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library‘ (SNFL) hatte jährlich über zwei Mio. Ausleihen. Die schiere Menge stellte eine zunehmende Herausforderung für den Zugang, die Organisation und Lagerung der Bestände dar. 2015 wurde schließlich das Planungsteam von Mecanoo (Delft) und Beyer Blinder Belle Architects (New York) beauftragt, eine neue Lösung für das in die Jahre gekommene Bibliotheksgebäude zu finden. Mittels umfangreicher Sanierung und Aufstockung präsentiert sich nun das SNFL als Bibliothek der neuen Generation. Sie bietet spezielle Einrichtungen für junge Erwachsene und Berufseinsteiger an. Das Herzstück ist ein langer Saal, ein neues Atrium, das sich über drei Etagen spannt und die neuen Bücherregale von den flexiblen Lesebereichen abtrennt. Die Kosten für die Umbaumaßnahmen betrugen 200 Millionen Dollar.
The New York 'Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library' (SNFL) had an annual circulation of over two million copies. The sheer volume presented an increasing challenge for access, organisation and storage of the collections. In 2015, the design team of Mecanoo (Delft) and Beyer Blinder Belle Architects (New York) was finally commissioned to find a new solution for the ageing library building. Through extensive renovation and additions, the SNFL now presents itself as a new-generation library. It offers special facilities for young adults and young professionals. The centrepiece is a long hall, a new atrium that spans three floors and separates the new bookshelves from the flexible reading areas. The cost of the transformation was $200 million.
