Die Hayden Library des MIT, ein Bau der
Architekten Voorhees, Walker, Foley & Smith aus dem Jahr 1951, liegt
im Südflügel eines größeren Baublocks, der auch eine Musikbibliothek, einen
kleinen Konzertsaal und Seminarräume beherbergt. Im Zuge der Sanierung 2021
haben Kennnedy & Violich das eigentliche Bibliotheksfoyer großzügiger gestaltet
und sich kreuzende Treppenläufe aus Stahl als Verbindung zum oberen Lesesaal eingefügt.
Ihr Entwurfsmotto „Research Crossroads“, manifestiert sich hier in zwei
eingestellten Pavillons, die auf zwei Ebenen kleine Arbeits-Separées, einen
Aufzug, Druckerräume und weitere Nebenräume enthalten. Beide gemeinsam trennen
das Café am Innenhof vom ruhigeren Lesebereich am Charles River. Der größte
Teil des Bücherbestands ist im Bibliotheksmagazin gelagert, das sich im
Untergeschoss bis unter den Innenhof erstreckt.
Darüber hinaus musste das MIT die Rolle der Bibliothek im Studentenleben
berücksichtigen, insbesondere im digitalen Zeitalter. „Wir wollten Verbindung
und Gemeinschaft betonen“, sagt Chris Bourg, Bibliotheksdirektor des MIT.
MIT's Hayden Library, a 1951 structure by architects Voorhees, Walker, Foley & Smith,
occupies the south wing of a larger block that also houses a music library, a
small concert hall, and seminar rooms. In the course of the renovation in 2021,
Kennnedy & Violich made the actual library foyer more spacious and inserted
crossing steel staircases as a connection to the upper reading room. The design
motto "Research Crossroads" manifests itself here in two pavilions
that contain small work booths, an elevator, printer rooms and other ancillary
rooms on two levels. Both together separate the courtyard café from the quieter
reading area on the Charles River. The largest part of the stock of books is
stored in the library stacks, which extends in the basement to below the inner
courtyard. Additionally, MIT needed to consider the role of the library in
student life, especially in the digital age. "We wanted to emphasize
connection and community," says Chris Bourg, MIT's library director.
