Die Hauptbücherei der Stadt Wien liegt zentral über der U-Bahn-Station Burggasse-Stadthalle am Urban-Loritz-Platz. Das Gebäude ist ein 150m langer Riegel, welchen man über eine große Freitreppe betritt. Auf zwei Ebenen stehen 240.000 Bücher und 60.000 audiovisuelle Medien sowie Zeitungen und Zeitschriften zur Verfügung. Ein Bereich namens Kirango steht speziell für Kinder bereit. Es gibt 130 Computerarbeitsplätze für Katalog- und Internetrecherchen sowie 40 Audio- und Videoplätze. Ziel war es damals, durch die neue Bücherei nicht nur ein Lesezentrum, sondern auch einen neuen Kommunikations- und Kulturknotenpunkt zu schaffen.
The main
library of the City of Vienna is centrally located above the underground
station Burggasse-Stadthalle at Urban-Loritz-Platz. The building is 150m long
and can be entered via a large staircase. On two levels there are 240,000 books
and 60,000 audiovisual media as well as newspapers and magazines. An area
called Kirango is especially for children. There are 130 computer workstations
for catalogue and internet research and 40 audio and video workstations. The
aim at the time was to create not only a reading centre but also a new
communication and cultural hub through the new library. Since 2002, the main
library has been using the BiblioChip RFID system for contactless media booking
and security. This enables library customers to book their borrowings
themselves at their own reading devices (similar to a scanner or copier).
