Die 18.650 Quadratmeter große Bibliothek befindet sich im Kerngebiet von Xujiahuiyuan. Das Gebäude verfügt über rund 800 Sitzplätze für Leser und setzt sich aus zwei Etagen unter der Erde und drei Etagen über der Erde zusammen. Sie umfasst neben Literaturlektüre, einen Lesebereich für Kinder, Ausstellungs- und Vortragsräume, Kunstbetrachtung, einen Kulturbasar sowie Touristeninformationsdienste. Ebenfalls sind hier die Sammlungen von „The Yongle Canon“, eine alte Enzyklopädie des Si Ku Quan Shu, die kaiserlichen Literatursammlungen und einer Sammlung antiker Literatur, die in der Qing-Dynastie (1644-1911) zusammengestellt wurde, zu finden. Das Gebäude wurde ursprünglich von David Chipperfield Architects als Buchhandlung entworfen, bevor es zur Zikawei-Bibliothek wurde. Leider wurde das Gebäude nach Fertigstellung der Fassade und des Gerüsts wegen Geldproblemen aufgegeben. Diese Struktur wurde schließlich als öffentliche Bibliothek im Bezirk ausgewählt und erhielt den Namen Zikawei-Bibliothek. Zusätzlich gibt es in Shanghai noch eine weitere Bibliothek mit dem Namen Zi-Ka-Wie Bibliothek. Sie befindet sich im Xujiahui Bezirk und ist auch als „Bibliotheque de Mission“ bekannt, ist sie die erste moderne Bibliothek, die in Shanghai, gegründet wurde.
The 18,650
square metre library is located in the core area of Xujiahuiyuan. The building
has about 800 seats for readers and consists of two underground and three
above-ground floors. In addition to reading literature, there is also a reading
area for children, exhibition and lecture rooms, art exhibitions, a cultural
bazaar and a tourist information centre. It also houses the collections of the
Yongle Canon, an ancient encyclopaedia by Si Ku Quan Shu, the imperial
literature collections and a collection of ancient literature from the Qing
Dynasty (1644-1911). The building was originally designed by David Chipperfield
Architects as a bookshop before becoming the Zikawei Library. Unfortunately,
the building was abandoned due to lack of funds after the façade and
scaffolding were completed. This building was eventually chosen as the
neighbourhood's public library and was named the Zikawei Library. There is also
another library in Shanghai called Zi-Ka-Wie Library. Located in the Xujiahui
district, it is also known as the "Bibliotheque de Mission" and is
the first modern library in Shanghai.
