Das „Richelieu Quadrat“ der französischen Nationalbibliothek (BnF) in Paris beherbergt heute vor allem die Spezialsammlungen der BnF: Gravuren und Fotografien, Münzen, Medaillen und Antiquitäten, die Kartenabteilung, die Abteilung für Musik- und Schaukünste sowie Handschriften und Archivalien. Seit 1933 ist sie auch Sitz der Bibliothek des Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, (INHA) und seit der Vollendung der ersten Phase der Renovierungsarbeiten auch die Bibliothèque der École des Chartes. Somit sind drei öffentlichkeitswirksame Institutionen in demselben historischen Objekt untergebracht. Die Grenze zwischen öffentlichem und nicht-öffentlichem Bereich wurde bei der Renovierung verschoben: Große Teile des Büchermagazins sind nun für die Benutzer zugänglich und der Hauptsaal wurde umorganisiert und an die neuen Lernbedürfnisse angepasst. Gleichzeitig entstanden hier zahlreiche neue Arbeitsplätze für Bibliotheksbesucher. 1,7 Millionen Bücher und Dokumente umfasst die Bibliothek des Nationalen Instituts für Kunstgeschichte, etwa 150 000 Bände stehen im Hauptsaal.
The "Richelieu Square" of the National Library of France (BnF) in Paris now mainly houses the BnF's special collections: engravings and photographs, coins, medals and antiquities, the Map Department, the Department of Music and Fine Arts, and the Manuscripts and Archives Collection. Since 1933, it has also been home to the library of the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art, (INHA) and, since the completion of the first phase of renovations, the Bibliothèque de l'École des Chartes. Thus, three public institutions are housed in the same historic building. The boundary between public and non-public areas was shifted during the renovation: Large parts of the book depository are now accessible to users and the main hall was reorganised and adapted to the new learning needs. At the same time, numerous new workstations were created here for library visitors. The library of the National Institute of Art History contains 1.7 million books and documents, about 150 000 volumes are in the main hall.
